The Terrace of Wonders: Vico Equense

Hello Italy lovers,

Today, we’re heading to a magical place—a terrace in the beautiful Vico Equense where beauty seems to have concentrated in one single spot.

You’ve chosen to spend a weekend in Naples, and following the recommendations from Das bella Italien, you’re fully embracing your Italian moment. It’s October, and despite the season, you’ve been welcomed by the perfect temperature. A pleasant sun caresses your skin, making you feel good.

Guided by our team’s suggestions, you’ve decided to spend Friday in Vico Equense, a town on the Sorrento Peninsula nestled between the Gulf of Naples, the Lattari Mountains, and the Gulf of Salerno. Few pocket guides and agencies truly capture the beauty of this enchanting little place.

At 10:00, after a delightful breakfast with coffee, cappuccino, and a slice of homemade cake prepared for you by the B&B recommended by Das bella Italien, you’ve arrived at Vico Equense station. Undoubtedly, the first stop has to be the famous and romantic terrace: the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata. This church, perched on the sea, is one of the few examples of Gothic architecture in the area. With its beautiful terrace, it rises on a stunning block of tufa and offers a panorama considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. The interiors and exteriors of this church are sure to make you fall madly in love.

Here’s a curiosity for you: In 2014, the church secured the first place in Marco Polo’s ranking of the most beautiful sanctuaries in Italy.

  • The famous meter-long pizza. A thicker crust compared to the traditional Neapolitan one and served by the meter.
  • The Provolone del Monaco DOP. I’m telling you about a typical cheese from the Vico Equense area, a semi-hard stretched-curd cheese, aged, made with the milk of cows grazing in the Lattari Mountains.
  • A dish made with fresh fish. In the area, there are many Michelin-starred restaurants where good cuisine reigns supreme. At the Vico Equense hotel school, two great Italian chefs, internationally renowned, were trained: Antonino Cannavacciuolo and Gennaro Esposito.

After a delicious lunch, I recommend taking a stroll through the beautiful streets overlooking the sea and exploring the many small shops with local creations. Another beautiful stop can still captivate you: The Campanian Mineralogical Museum. The cultural institution was inaugurated on October 22, 1992, and is one of the most important scientific museums in the Campania region for the number, variety, and rarity of the exhibited specimens.

It’s late afternoon, but Vico Equense still offers you some delightful treats: a nice gelato from a well-known local gelateria, “Gabriele,” and an excellent Neapolitan coffee.

Thanks to Das bella Italien suggestions, another true Italian moment for you!
